Thank You for Investing in Democracy
Election Day reminds us that democracy depends not only on candidates, but on citizens willing to participate. Throughout the year Game Changers members invested in competitive legislative races because state governments shape many of the policies that affect our daily lives.
Your generous donations blew the Game Changers Giving Circle past its fundraising goal of $100,000 - together we raised $113,324 for Michigan’s state elections. Sweet success!
Michigan State Mid-Term Election Results
Michigan voters delivered a decisive night for Democrats, handing the party a full trifecta of state government. While six races are still too close to call, the trifecta has been achieved.
Our goal was to expand the Senate majority and to flip at least four seats to gain control of the House. We did that – and more!
Of the 18 races our donations supported, Republicans flipped one seat, one is too close to call, and the other 16 seats were won by Democrats!
As the final votes are counted, we’ll be watching closely to see how the new Legislature approaches priorities such as expanding economic opportunity and healthcare accessibility, strengthening public schools, protecting voting rights, and addressing infrastructure needs.
The States Project - Other Midterm Successes
Seven new trifectas were achieved in AZ, MI, MN, PA, WI, NV, and AL. This is where Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate and a Democratic Governor was elected (a Governor’s election is not the focus of TSP). This brings the total Democratic trifectas to 22 vs.17 Republican trifectas!
Additional Chamber flips happened in GA, NH, NC and TX.
Republican supermajorities were overcome in IN, IA, KS, NC, NE and OH, making it easier for newly elected Democratic Governors to accomplish their agendas.
